What does gold-filled mean?

Gold-filled jewellery is made by mechanically bonding a layer of gold to a base-metal core using heat and pressure. It is not solid gold. Unlike a thin electroplated gold coating, the bonded gold layer is generally thicker and more resistant to wear, offering the look of gold at a more accessible price than solid-gold jewellery.
